Denmark stormed to a 4-1 victory over Russia in order to qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2020 on Monday and the performance of Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had tongues wagging.
The Danes lost their opening two games of the tournament and had to win to ensure they had any chance of progressing any further.
Denmark were able to secure a comfortable victory due to impressive goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, Yussuf Poulsen, Andreas Christensen, and Joakim Mæhle; yet no-nonsense midfielder Hojbjerg found himself getting just as much praise as his goalscoring teammates due to his efforts.
The Spurs midfielder registered two assists in his latest outing, which means he has racked up a total of three assists so far at Euro 2020 as he also created Poulsen’s goal in the 2-1 loss to Roberto Martinez’s Belgium.
Hojbjerg isn’t really known for his creative prowess usually, with the Dane only managing to register nine assists in the 147 Premier League appearances he has made in his career so far.
So perhaps this is why Tottenham fans, in particular, were extra impressed with Hojbjerg’s latest display for Denmark.
One Tottenham fan claimed Hojbjerg played like a man possessed and even compared him to legendary midfielders Lothar Matthaus and Andrea Pirlo, while another Spurs supporter suggested that the 25-year-old was among the best midfielders at Euro 2020.
Tottenham are currently without a manager following the departure of Jose Mourinho, so it’ll be interesting to see what performances the next Spurs boss gets out of Hojbjerg as they may be able to unlock the more creative side of his game.
The 25-year-old joined the London club from Southampton last summer, with him believed to have cost the club £15million.
A selection of supporters were totally buzzing over Hojbjerg’ latest performance on Twitter following Denmark beating Russia 4-1 to qualify for the knockout stages at Euro 2020:
Hojbjerg has been like a man possessed. Like Matthäus and Pirlo rolled into one. Unbelievable.

Hojbjerg looked incredible tonight. Mobile, breaking up play, getting forward & threatening with long shots & assisting 2 of the goals.
Systems are so important. The player alongside you is so important. Jose made him one dimensional. He’s not. Roll on Potter or whoever it may be pic.twitter.com/GlAHFAfdSU— ᴅᴀᴠɪᴅ ᴇʟʟɪs • (@fullback03) June 21, 2021
Hojbjerg has been one of the best midfielders in the Euros so far but you won’t hear about it because he plays for spurs pic.twitter.com/OD8koK0BRb
